Bellagio “O” July 20, 2005Posted by MM in Mind Boggling Thoughts.
There are so many shows in Las Vegas. However, the name that I heard most is “O”. And one co-worker even said that compared with “O,” “Mama-Mia” is nothing. Well, I havne’t seen “O” yet. So I will remain doubt toward the above comment. Besides, I am always a big fan of musicals. So I guess it is just different stroke for different folks.
“O”s full name is “Cirque du Soleil’s ‘O'”. since so many people give great and fantastic comments about this show, it makes me really want to see it. 🙂 It is shown in Bellagio. (The reviews say: The show is amazing. It is a step into the surreal. Basic elements of water, earth, fire, and air are mixed and mingled in a variety of spectacular performances of dancing, swimming, acrobatics, and clowning. It is difficult to say, “the show is about…,” because the themes and the elements, and how the performers interact with these things, are what the show centers around. The show is a triumph in exploring the boundaries of performance with the elements.)
However, it is just way too hard to find a good seat (like in the middle and in the front rows), especially during weekends. And it might be hard to have another day off this year if I want to go back home this winter. Sign, It seems that it has to be in next year’s to-do list.
After doing some more research, it seems that there another three shows that are very similar to “O.” One is K Cirque du Soleil (), and the other one is Zumanity (in New York Hotel), and the other is Mystere (Treasure Island).
Cirque du Soleil turns out to be a French-Canadian company (http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/). Wow, they have much more shows that I have heard about.
According to www.a2zlasvegas.com/events/production.html, the following are the reviews about the above three shows:
KA (http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/Cirquedusoleil/en/KA/main.htm?bandWidth=Hi): KA brings the visual language of cinema to a dazzling live event that is more about storytelling than any previous Cirque production. The show’s underlying theme of duality is underscored by the opposing powers of fire to create and to destroy.
My comments: It is the only show that tells a full story of twins heirs (. So some people say if you are not very familiar with western arts, it might be more understandable to see this one. Also when reviewing the website, I think there are more Asian artistic elements in this show.
Zumanity(http://www.zumanity.com/): another side of Cirque du Soleil” is playing inside the New York-New York Hotel & Casino. It is an exploration of sex and sexuality, and the range and depth of this exploration is wonderful. This production bears all of the classic trademarks of a Cirque extravaganza, but is the first time that the company has dealt with the exploration of human sexuality. “Zumanity‚Äôs” look at love, sensuality and eroticism, in all its forms, is ultimately a story of human emotion, the nature of beauty, and the acceptance of differences.

My comments: well, it is really about sex and sexuality. But as long as it shows the beauty of them, I think it will be a great show. BTW, the seating design is funny. They provide “Duo Sofa” for couples.
Mystere (http://www.treasureisland.com/pages/ent_mystere.asp): Mystere is a visual fantasia with acrobatics, tumbling, pole dancing, hand balancing, bungee dancers, and more. The production is underscored by live progressive music as well.
My comment: it looks like a Chinese ZAJI upgrated with fabulous costumes, contemporary music, fascinating light effects. Although I don’t like some of the creatures they have on posters, the show obtains amazingly good reviews.
While reviewing KA’s website, I found that the following people are needed for a show:
- Creator / Director
- Director of Creation
- Theatre and Set Designer
- Costume Designer
- Composer and Arranger
- Lighting Designer
- Sound Designer
- Interactive Projections Designer
- Puppet Designer
- Props Designer
- Acrobatic equipment and rigging desinger
- Make-up Designer
